Béton ciré concrete-effect plaster in Los Angeles

Concrete effect laid in wide passes and waxed back to a low sheen. Warmer and more hand-made than microcement, and deliberately not seamless — the passes are the point.

What it is

A fine cement-and-lime coat troweled in broad, overlapping passes, burnished as it firms up, then fed with a hard wax. The wax is what separates it from microcement: it sits *in* the surface, so the sheen moves as you walk past rather than lying flat across the wall.

Where it works

Kitchens, worktops, stair treads, fireplace surrounds and feature walls — anywhere a concrete look is wanted without pouring concrete. It takes a warm colour better than microcement does, which is usually why people choose it.

What to expect

The passes show, and they are meant to; if a perfectly uniform surface is the goal, microcement is the honest recommendation instead. Wax wants refreshing every few years on a worktop, less often on a wall, and we show you how.

Every colour here is the studio’s own, and every swatch is drawn from its hex value rather than photographed. Screens differ, and so does the light in your room — we make sample boards on site before anything goes on a wall, and that is what the colour is decided from.
